The girls have a lot of homemade baby blankets. 3 of my coworkers made them blankets, as well as my sister. I love it. My Grandma made me a blanket when I was a baby and I slept with that thing until I left for college. I would have brought it with me, but it was sooo torn up and dirty by that point, that I thought it best to leave it at home.
One thing that was curious to me, is how my girls would establish what's their property and what is their sisters. One of my co-workers/roommate/really good friend, made a beautiful pink blanket for them. She was a full time special ed teacher at the time, and this blanket took a lot of time that she didn't have. She apologized for only being able to make one. It really wasn't a big deal, but I was a tad concerned because I didn't know how to pick which girl to "give it" to. Little did I know how naturally things would fall into place...
Lillian on the left, Sophie on the right.
(yes, I realize there's a large age gap between these two pictures. Not sure how we didn't get any blanket shots in those months...)
Can you guess which one got it?
Sophie.
Sophie loves her blanket. She takes it everywhere, always wants it on her head (luckily, there are holes it in, so she can see through it. In fact, it's her favorite game.) and has a really, really hard time falling asleep without it. If she's sad, she wants her blanket. If she's excited, she wants her blanket. Sometimes, she'll even bury her face in it and start whispering, as if she's telling it all of her secrets.
She loves it. I love it. I'm very grateful for it. And I'm grateful that Lillian knows it's her sister's and hasn't put up a fight for it at all. Lillian is more of a fleece kind of gal and favors another blanket I got from work. We had a youth group (I think it was EFY?) donate 60+ blankets and my boss sent me home with two.
But there's no question. This is Sophie's blanket. I didn't have to give it to her. The twins worked it out on their own. Maybe that's what twins do. Maybe I shouldn't be so worried that they're going to hate each other and be competitive when they're older. Maybe it will all work out and they'll know that they each have strengths and talents of their own, separate from their sister. Maybe this twin thing doesn't have to be such scary thing after all.
So thanks, Amy Jane. Your blanket has definitely been put to good use.
And by the way, my girls love all of their blankets. They love tracing their fingers on the turtles on the ones Amanda made them, they squeal when they see The Muppets on the blankets that Jenny made, and they could spend hours pointing out the different patches on the quilts that Brooke made. There's just something about this one and that fleece blanket with elephants and flowers that have really tugged on the girls' heartstrings.
They absolutely love them.
