I don't want to forget

Whew. Can I tell you how good it felt to get that little vent out? Thanks for you responses. I hope it didn't sound too much like a rant, but the truth is that life with two 2 year olds is sometimes hard and I needed the world to know that. Anyway, now on to the real purpose of this post...

As hard as this stage is, I love it. I love the humor my little girls have. I love their concern for their sister. I love their language development. I love so many things about right now.

I don't want to forget how much the girls love eating fresh food straight out of our neighbor's garden

I don't want to forget how Lillian has been falling asleep in the middle of playtime lately.
Or how Sophie is constantly confused by it.

I don't want to forget how sticky these girls ALWAYS are and how ten minutes after a bath, they're sticky again.

I don't want to forget the way Sophie says her name or how it's become a nickname for her. My little Fo-see is incredibly adorable.

I don't want to forget how much the girls love our neighbor. And how every morning, they check to see if she's out waiting for her preschool kids. They're so, so jealous of those kids, but I think if her students knew how much time my girls got to spend with Mrs. Jenny, they'd be the jealous ones.

I don't want to forget how urgent everything is that Lillian has to say. She's a woman of few words, but when she does talk, it's intense.

I don't want to forget how much the girls (but particularly Sophie) love puppies. I happily feed the addiction and consequently we have at least a dozen puppy stuffed animals.

I don't want to forget how these girls can spot a plane in the sky like it's nobody's business.

I don't want to forget how much these girls want to be big kids. So playing at the park with the preschool kids was the BEST thing I could have done for them.

I don't want to forget Sophie's march/walk/dance. She walks around like this a lot and it's hilarious.

I don't want to forget Lillian's curiosity. She never gives up on figuring things out. She is definitely the more curios of the two.

And I don't want to forget that these girls are best friends. They usually don't wake up at the same time in the morning, and the first girl up is always concerned about where "sissy" is. They giggle constantly, fight regularly, but forgive in a blink of an eye. They are the best and I still can't believe they're mine.

Let's talk about twins.

Can we talk about twins for a minute (or ten)? Truthfully, I try to avoid twin talk too much on this blog because I think it can be a polarizing topic. There's almost an unspoken tension between moms of singletons and moms of twins (the tension comes from both parties, I might add) and there's a constant debate of which is harder. Twins? A 16 month old a a newborn? A 3 year old and a 2 year old? Which mom is more tired? Which ones has fuller hands? Which one should be able to complain more?

It's kind of ridiculous and I really try to avoid it. But today, I'm going to talk about my perspective. My current perspective is two 2 year old twins.

And guess what? They kick my butt.

Sometimes it's hard to split up a fight between siblings that are on the exact same cognitive level.

Sometimes it's hard from having two kids in cribs to have 0 kids in cribs over night.

Sometimes it's hard to get so much attention at the grocery store because everyone just has to tell you about their second cousin's husband who is a twin. And how they always wanted twins or how they know a set of girl/boy identical twins. Alrighty then...

Sometimes it's hard because I've been out numbered from day one.

Sometimes it's hard because I've never been able to just throw my kid in the car and go. I mentally prepare for every outing and I do nothing spontaneous if I'm by myself with them.

Sometimes it's hard because I have two children who everyone sees as a unit. They are "the twins" or "the girls" or "Sophie and Lillian" I worry so much about people loving them for the individuals they are. I catch myself calling them "the girls" ALL the time and know I should probably stop it. What if we have another girl? Would she be considered "the girls" too? I don't want one of them to always be in their sister's shadow.

Sometimes it's hard because I create that shadow. Sophie talks a lot more than Lillian and I encourage Sophie so much more than I do Lillian. I'm a major part of the problem and that's a hard thing to realize.

Sometimes it's hard because sometimes there is a favorite (although that favorite changes) but I'm too afraid to admit it because what kind of mother has favorites?

Sometimes it's hard because I'm prideful. Too freakin' prideful. I could probably count the times I've asked for help on my finger (well, maybe I'd have to add a few toes in there too...) but I'm grateful to have a friend (who's also my next door neighbor) who I know I can call any second of the day and she'll drop whatever she's doing to help me. But it's hard to show that vulnerability. It's hard to let someone discipline your kids while you're literally on the hallway floor in tears.

And sometimes I hate all the praise I get. You guys, I'm really not that stellar. Do you know how many times I've left my girls in their room screaming because I'm simply not ready to face them? Do you know how many times I've dumped them on Josh the moment he walks in the door after a 13 hour work day? Do you know how many times I've wondered "why me" in a self pity way?

It's ridiculous. And I need to get this two year old thing figured out. I swear the moment they turned two, they changed. They became so defiant, so independent and all of the sudden annoyed by their sister.

And then I look at what the next year is probably going to look like. We'll be potty training, letting them socialize more, trying to teach them to actually use big kid cups, they're going to start speaking in sentences, we might even put them in preschool. All of this makes me look within myself and figure out if I'm ready. I know that I have plenty of people who will tell me that I am, but I'm not so sure. And I'm not so sure any of these things unique to twins will change. I mean, do we keep them in the same class? Split them up? Let them pick out what they want to wear, even if that means matching every day? How do we encourage independence? What if they get on two different sides in a quarrel with friends? What if their teachers always compare them? What if they don't get the individual attention they need? What if *I* don't give them the individual attention they need? Does Sophie really know that I love Sophie and Lillian know that I love Lillian?

Now, I should say that most of the times, things are not hard and most of the time I don't harp on these unknowns of the future, but sometimes life is hard and sometimes I do worry, but I never really talk about it. I'm grateful that I have twin in the age of the internet. I've got a great online group of twin moms that I can go to for questions. I have many amazing twin moms that I know in real life who have given me a lot of support. I'm grateful that twins are common enough that I pass them every now at then at the grocery store and I exchange that look with the mom. The look that only moms of multiples can understand. The look of, "I know how hard and scary your pregnancy was and I know the financial burden of bringing home two babies at once and the physical and mental pain tandem breastfeeding is and I know how crazy it is to change 20 diapers a day and I know how having two newly vaccinated two months olds sucks and I know how a 30 minutes shopping trip turns into a 2 hour shopping trip because you have 4 diapers to change and 37 people to talk to and I know the dilemma of everyone asking you why one of your twins isn't walking/talking/sleeping/pooping/laughing/scratching her ear right at this moment and I know you love strangers asking you if your twins are 'natural' or if they 'run in your families' and I know the strange feelings you get when people praise you when all you feel like is a failure and I know that this is an incredibly runon sentence, but you're a twin mom too and we're reading each other's minds and I know you're thinking the EXACT same thing."

But then, in that same looks there's the "I know you know the joy of seeing your 3 month olds discover their siblings the first time and I know you love snuggling two newborns at once and getting double the first little giggles and I know you sometimes love the attention because people are right, your babies are adorable and you are the luckiest mom in the world and I know how it feels when you finally get two babies sleeping through the night and from that moment on, you feel like you can solve all the problems in the middle east and I know you love watching your twins learn from and push each other and I know you love seeing your twins holding hands, giving each other kisses and constantly being at each other's side and I know you probably feel a little jealous of them because how awesome would it be to BE a twin?! And I again, we both know that this is a lot of information to telepathically share in a 5 seconds glance, but we know how true everything we just thought is. We really are lucky." side of the look.

And it's true. We probably aren't supermoms like everyone claims we are, but we are pretty lucky. When times get hard (like they are right now at our house) I need to remember that. I need to remember that Sophie and Lillian won't be two forever. Hopefully they'll grow out of the biting, the hitting, the coloring on the walls, and being terrified of toilets. Yes, there will come a day when they can actually verbalize what they are feeling, will poop in toilets and will grow up to be individual, independent women. It's hard to think that way when you're in the middle of a sleepless night with a scared toddler or two, but I know those days will come

But for now, we just have to remember to have a little sense of humor because having two two-year olds at once is crazy and kind of hilarious.

Some more thoughts brought to you by Brittany

These random, bullet-ed posts have really taken spot on this blog of mine. I mean, you all have random thoughts that you don't know what to do with, right? Here are my most recent...

  • I miss the days when you could eat anywhere and shop anywhere without supporting a cause. I'm a little bit annoyed at restaurants, hardware stores, and craft stores getting involved with politics. Because all of the sudden, if I want a chicken sandwich I'm a bigot, and if I shop at Home Depot, I'm not supporting what God wants. And the newest thing with Hobby Lobby? Suing over Obamacare? I think the whole thing is silly. I just want to eat a chicken sandwich and buy a hammer in peace. Wanna know what else I think is silly? Hobby Lobby in general. Have you read my friend Becky's post on it? You'll laugh, I promise. Unless you love Hobby Lobby...
  • Speaking of Becky. Did you know that we had a playdate the other day? You probably didn't. Why? Because I suck at blogging. And the few pictures I took weren't super because I spent most of the picture taking time trying to bribe my children to behave. Every time I'm around Becky, I want to be a better cook, homemaker, sewer, photographer, and awesome person. Why? Because Becky excels at all of those things. Here's her writeup of our morning together.
  • I have a love/hate relationship with online shopping. Why is it that there is SO much I want to buy? I don't feel like I'm an over extravagant person, but give me 30 minutes at gap.com and a hypothetical $500 and I could do some serious pretend damage.
  •  And speaking of hypothetical money, do you guys have an ongoing 'list' of things you want/are going to get? I'm not talking shoes or anything, but big things like a second freezer, or a new mattress, or bikes for your entire family, or a new camera lens. And that's only about half the list. Someone needs to teach me to be content with what I have...
  • Sophie hasn't had a binky all week. She doesn't ask for it too much either. I think we've made serious progress.
  •  I currently have two apple cinnamon candles burning in my house right now. It smells like Christmas and I am in Heaven.
  •  I've had a abnormally large desire to craft lately. I made felt bows, turned some instagrams into magnets, and want to take up crocheting. I have a very strong need to buy pretty yarn.

I think that's about all I've got for now. Until next time, here's a picture.

Going on a bear hunt

Ok, not quite, but we had a neighborhood campout this past weekend (and I should say that I'm really glad we didn't see a bear. Especially since there was a grusome bear attack at the same camp ground a few years back). I was pretty hesitant to take the girls camping because every time we've tried to get them to sleep in a different environment (the cabin, Florida etc) it hasn't been super successful. I had nightmares of them screaming at 3 in the morning and waking everyone up. Luckily, that didn't really happen. They played until about 10 pm and although they took a little while to fall asleep, they mostly slept through the night. Sophie woke up a couple of times, but she was quick to go back to sleep. Overall, it was really fun and definitely better than I was anticipating. Here's a few obligatory snapshots.

and our best attempt at a family picture (aka the only one that the girls weren't screaming in and Lillian wasn't biting herself)

I've camped with two year old twins.
I feel like I can do anything now.

18

My little sister is celebrating her Golden Birthday. 18 on the 18th. Just the thought of that makes me want to laugh, scream, cry and laugh some more. I don't even know what to say. Kelsey is the kindest, smartest, most genuine, hilarious 18 year old on the planet. Really, Kelsey is the greatest.

And now that she's 18 and heading off to college soon, she's going to conquer the crap out of this world.

Kelsey , Brooke and myself at our cousin's wedding a few months ago.

Happy birthday, Kelsey. Like I said the other day, you're a total badass.  ;)
(and again, I say that with no fear of the repercussions from mom.)

State Fair

There doesn't to be need much of an introduction for this post. We went to the State Fair yesterday and the girls loved it. We've gone every year since they were born (yes, we even went when they were a month old and I pumped in the car! Crazy...) but this year was the first year that they really enjoyed it. Here are a few ton of pics.

And yes, I was freaking out a little in this moment. Sheeps/goats/whatever the heck this thing is really creep this city girl out...

We did our best to recreate this and this picture, while still keeping Lillian, the toddler, contained. ;)

They had an adorable "little hands" farm set up. The kids were able to pick apples, milk a plastic cow, get eggs from a chicken coop, plant seeds, harvest vegetables, it was adorable. And I know the first picture is horribly over exposed, but I still love it.

And just to prove I was there...
We loved the animals, the hickish culture, the food, and our incredible parking spot. Really, we were able to park about 30 feet from the entrance.

I don't think it could have gotten any better. The State Fair has definitely become a yearly tradition for our family.

But seriously, look how small they were two years ago! They weren't even 6 pounds!!!

Inchworm

A few days before last Christmas, Josh came home with an inchworm for the girls. It thought he was a little crazy (but mostly adorable) for buying it because the girls were still so little and it was the middle of winter. What he realized is that this summer, we'd have two 2 year olds that would love it. Our driveway is pretty steep, so at first the overprotective mom in me came out and I only wanted them to use it on the flat parts. Luckily, the wheels don't work like regular wheels and you really have to bounce it to get it to go fast. The girls haven't figured that out quite yet, so it doesn't get going very fast. Anyway...

Then...

And now...

Their faces in this one KILL me!

We also took it out last night at sunset. Notice how the pictures get progressively more orange. I thought about fixing the white balance, but I kinda liked it...

Lillian was a not super stoked about the whole sharing thing.

I'd definitely say that they like the worm.
